Camp Sunny Side Dock Project
For the past several years members of the Mid-Iowa Bassmasters have been instrumental in maintaining the docks at Easter Seals Camp Sunny Side to assure they are safe for the campers to use while fishing or boarding the camp’s pontoon boat. The time had come, however, to replace the floating dock as it was becoming increasingly unsafe. The floats beneath the dock were deteriorating, and no longer able to keep the dock balanced. In researching many current dock manufacturers, we found Shore Station to be the best suited in terms of safety and long-term durability, with extruded aluminum, powder coated finish and redwood sideboard. Our design called for the dock to be U shaped to allow for safe loading on both sides as well as the front of the pontoon. We did find, however, that the cost for the quality we were seeking was three times what we had anticipated, so it was decided to the construct of the new dock would take place in two phases. Phase two, which we hope to undertake this spring, will complete the U configuration and the installation of a canopy over the pontoon area. This project has been made possible by proceeds derived from the “Original Fisherman’s Swap Meet and Boat Show.”

A special thanks to Shore Distributing, Inc. of Garwin, Iowa for their competitive pricing on this project.

MID IOWA BASSMASTER'S
Stub and Vi Johnson
Volunteer of the Year Award

Volunteers are individuals of all ages who offer their talents, time and abilities to Easter Seals without monetary compensation. Volunteers help Easter Seals fulfill its mission by freeing staff to assist clients in meeting their needs. In turn, our varied volunteer roles offer individuals the opportunity to experience the satisfaction and fulfillment of providing valuable and responsible services to their community. Last year, our volunteers contributed more than 15,000 hours of service to Easter Seals - a gift valued at $222,000! Selecting a Volunteer of the Year is never an easy task. Each person who contributes their talents to Easter Seals is greatly appreciated; and we're pleased to have a pool of nominees from our programs to select from. At this time, we would like to recognize a group for their contributions toward helping us achieve our goals, by presenting them with our most prestigious award, the Stub and Vi Johnson Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is named in honor of the late A.M. "Stub" and Vi Johnson of Spencer. Stub was a founding father of the Pony Express Riders of Iowa. Throughout their lives, the Johnsons were committed to Easter Seals and our programs. Stub served on the original campgrounds building committee, and he and Vi made significant personal contributions to Easter Seals toward the enhancement of our services. This year's Stub and Vi Johnson Volunteer of the Year award winner is the Mid Iowa Bassmasters group. I'd like to invite the group president, Jim Jefferson, entertainment coordinator Rock Merryfield, and the other members of the group in attendance tonight to the stage. The Mid Iowa Bassmasters have channeled their volunteer efforts into Easter Seals for some time. Each year the group conducts a swap meet and collects fishing items for our campers to use. Last spring they repaired the docks on Lake Cheerio, and installed a chain-link fence around the front dock so it would be safer for our campers to use. Members have also come to camp and cleaned and organized the fishing shack and supplied us with fishing reels. The bounty of their fishing tournaments often end up stocking Lake Cheerio. The group's members have a desire to help Easter Seals in a variety of capacities. This past summer, Rock Merryfield and Bruce Davidson spent time fishing with our campers during our "Great Outdoors" theme week. Bruce Davidson, the group's vice president, was also very involved when we had to dredge the lake last fall, and the group paid for an aerator that was installed once dredging was complete. If that wasn't enough, the group also has purchased a John Deere push mower for camp so we can keep the island looking great. This is, of course, just a sampling of the volunteer commitment the Mid Iowa Bassmasters devote to Easter Seals and our recreational programs. Their efforts are representative of what volunteerism is all about - helping others, pulling together to accomplish a task, and giving unselfishly of one's time and talents. For the group's commitment to volunteerism and to people with disabilities, we're pleased to be able to present the Mid Iowa Bassmasters with this year's Stub and Vi Johnson Volunteer of the Year award.
